First Christian Church

Reverend M.F. Ingraham, evangelist for the First Oklahoma District of the Disciples of Christ, organized a meeting for interested Sandites in early 1919. Eleven people attended and this group grew until The First Christian Church was formally organized in November of 1919.
The congregation originally met in the Baptist Church and the high school auditorium under the evangelizing of W.D. Darnall of Phillips University.
They acquired land at Fifth and Main Street from the Presbyterian Church in 1920. An addition in 1933 doubled the church's occupancy and the building has been expanded to accommodate the growing congregation a number of other times throughout the years; pictured above is the church’s original structure in a 1923 postcard.
Keystone Ancient Forest

Located at 160 Ancient Forest Drive, the Keystone Ancient Forest is one of Sand Springs’ most stunning natural attractions. The forests of central Oklahoma are a transition point between the nation’s eastern forests and western prairies. These ‘Cross Timbers’ forests are a mosaic of prairie, thick forest, and open woodlands and the Keystone Ancient Forest is a classic example.
The 1,360 acre nature preserve is filled with 300-year-old Postoak trees and 500-year-old cedars. A variety of wildlife, from over 80 species of butterflies to mountain lion and deer, call the forest home.
Find additional information on this important American ecosystem or hike dates and other activities at the Keystone Ancient Forest. We ask that if you visit the forest, you leave behind only footsteps.
First Presbyterian Church

In August of 1908, a group of about 50 settlers met for their first worship service in the community by the sandy spring. Salvation Army Captain B.F. Breeding preached from the pulpit of an upturned barrel while his wife, Ethel, led the hymns with her guitar.
The congregation continued to grow from these humble beginnings, formally organizing on January 18, 1910 as the “First Presbyterian Church of Sand Springs, Oklahoma.”
The church originally met in a one-room schoolhouse before constructing its building at Fourth and Main in 1917 with Dr. Seth Gordon as minister (1912-1921). In 1913, Dr. Gordon also served as the acting President of the University of Tulsa.
By the 1960s, the church’s population had outgrown its downtown location and began construction of the present day First Presbyterian Church located on Adams Road. Coming full circle, the Adams Road site is the exact location of the original schoolhouse used for worship services in 1908.
